Introduction to Dr Heng Hock Gan

Dr Heng earned his DVM degree at the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in 1993 and later completed his MVS degree at the University of Melbourne, Australia. From there, he moved to the United States to complete his residency and MS degree at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 2004. Dr Heng then returned to the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia as a lecturer before joining the Purdue Veterinary Medicine faculty in 2007. Dr Heng also became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging in 2004 and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 2005. Dr Heng's research interests include ultrasounds of the gastrointestinal tract, forensic radiology, imaging of neoplasia, and imaging of orthopaedic diseases.

  • Basics of abdominal ultrasound

  • Understanding knobology (machine controls & settings)

  • Recognizing and minimizing artifacts

10:00 AM – Knobology Lab (Hands-on machine familiarization)

10:45 AM – Liver & Spleen Ultrasound

  • Normal anatomy, scanning techniques, and common pathologies

11:45 AM – Practical Session (Live animal scanning: Liver & Spleen)

1:00 PM – Lunch Break

2:00 PM – Urinary System & GI Tract Ultrasound

  • Kidneys, bladder, and gastrointestinal tract evaluation

3:00 PM – Practical Session (Urinary system, liver, and spleen reinforcement)

4:30 PM – Case Discussion (Review scans, Q&A, and troubleshooting)

5:00 PM – Adjourn

 

Day 2

9:00 AM – Adrenal Glands Ultrasound

  • Localization, normal appearance, and abnormalities

9:40 AM – Practical Session (Adrenal gland scanning & review)

11:20 AM – Pancreas & Lymph Nodes Ultrasound

  • Techniques for visualization and key pathologies

12:20 PM – Lunch Break

1:20 PM – Practical Session (Pancreas, lymph nodes, and full abdominal review)

3:50 PM – Case Discussion (Complex cases, challenges, and final tips)

5:00 PM – Adjourn
